The writers and producers at Motown were so prolific that so much material was being generated, which meant it was guaranteed that a lot of amazing songs would be left behind. It's also nearly unbelieveable that the artists, who didn't have the luxury of spending long periods of time learning songs because of constantly being on the go, could leave in the grooves such astounding performances. Many of the biggest hits were recorded in fewer takes than many would believe. Here is one of the all-time great performances that were left behind. "Lost For Words" contain some of the most witty and captivating word play ever commited to song. The Miracles' Warren "Pete" Moore, Smokey Robinson and Marv Tarplin wrote this poetic account of a man so in love with a woman so beautiful, that beauty rendered the man incapable of expressing his feelings. A common situation phrased in uncommon prose and style that goes beyond being merely a "good" song. Levi Stubs sings with a bit more restraint than we're used to hearing, and turns in a performance that is so emotionally true, anyone listening can hear a bit of themselves. Obie, Duke and Lawrence bring to the recording the class they demonstrated so well on jazz tunes and standards. Smokey and Pete Moore along with Motown's Funk Brothers create a music track that is as innovative as it is haunting. Yes Haunting. Those strings on the introduction sound nothing like rock 'n' roll or pop. They set the tone for what's to come and all of it is difficult to pinpoint. There is beauty, drama, sadness, pain and hope all rolled up in the combination of piano, guitars, drums, bass and vibes. As the song ends, we're uncertain if the narrator's situation will ever be resolved...A classic-even if it took over 40 years to be released.
