Here's one for inclusion with the all-time great Miracles and Motown recordings... Claudette Robinson is in the spotlight on this Miracles track- and she's there alone! The 1963 Berry Godry-Tyran Carlo composition, "Father Dear" rocks a bit more with the blues than pop; there is a lot more r&b here than would be heard in later years at Motown and Claudette handles it as if she was born to sing it.It would be great to hear more lead by Claudette, but if the number of those is few, this one makes up for it by being so good, you never tire of playing it! Actually, this wasn't released until 1994's "Smokey Robinson and the Miracles- The 35th Anniversary Collection" box set. What a crime. As good as Claudette sounds on backing vocals (and she definitely sounded good in the mix!) she sounds even better handling this song, the flip side to all those songs about mothers telling their sons to "Shop Around." The daugher is trying to decide how to tell her father that she's found "The One" and, well, he's about to loose his little girl. It's actually very moving and all those minor notes and the line "Mama Mama make Daddy understand / Not everyday you find the right man..." makes it a bittersweet account of what countless fathers of daughters have to deal with at one point or other. So, this is to all the Dads who will have to let go one day of their daughter's hand and watch as they walk down the altar onto a new life...
