Seduction... Pure Seduction. That's the experience of hearing Mary Wells... and when you hear Mary Wells singing "Whisper you love me boy," resistance in NOT an option.Holland, Dozier, Holland, Motown's incredible writing/producing team had an uncanny abillity to write lyrics that were straight to the point and yet hit with an intensity equal to a stun gun. Their lyrics were never about being clever or poetic and yet no one else had their gift for writing emotionally gripping songs with an economy of words. This is one of the best the team ever produced."Whisper You Love Me Boy" was recoreded by Mary as well as the Supremes and both versions are spectacular exercises in vocal seduction. I won't say one was better than the other version- they were both superb in different ways.Mary was able to sing with a minimum of fire-power and yet, it was that whispering style that gave her all the fire-power in the world. There is a sultry, low-boil quality to many of her performances after Smokey Robinson began working with her- and it seems Holland-Dozier-Holland knew how to capitalize on her wholesome sexiness. Mary is at once, the girl-next-door and the Woman who was a good step or two ahead of you in the wisdom department. "Whisper You Love Me Boy" is a plea for the lover's return to the days when love was new and exciting- you wonder how on earth anyone would ever be able to drift away from Mary in the first place! "Whisper You Love Me Boy" is from the "My Guy" album and like every other song on that LP, the Andantes are in spectacular form- they always sound like their vocals were exclusively tailored for whomever they sang with and on this recording, it sounds more as if the Andantes and Mary were an exclusive package deal. Notice how those backing vocals are incredibly fierce: "Come On And Whisper....WHISPER!" So go ahead, Whisper, better yet, shout out your love for the one and only, Mary Wells.
